Temporary public sculpture at the island of Askøy and exhibition at Hordaland art centre, Bergen
In the past houses were built for eternity. Today property and housing have changed from being a beloved necessity to becoming an investment. At least if we are to believe the media, where reports on homes are just as well about economics. As Norway has changed from a nation with sensible rations to a country of plenty, the relationship to our surroundings has changed too.
The family home at Holmedalshammaren 67 was built in 1956 by Hjalmar Michelsen for him and his family to live in. After he passed away in 2007 the house was bought by a group of investors that saw an oportunity to build modern apartments at the beautiful location of the house. The house was thus scheduled for demolition.
In order to give this house a last journey before its death, we made a scale model of the house that was to work as a architecture-voodoo doll: The model was sent to Bergen via Beijing, Sydney, New York City and Paris in a quite bad wrapping. It arrived at Hordaland Art Centre after this voyage around the world in a poor condition. The house at Askøy was recreated as the model looked when it returned. The materials which was removed from Holmedalshammaren 67 was used to make the exhibition at Hordaland Art Centre.
